The National Electrical Code (NEC) is updated every three years, with the 2017 edition being the most current publication so far. The NEC was first published in 1897. Some states are slower than others to adopt the most recent version after it is published, but on average most states adopt the most recent publication within two to three years of its release.

In fact, in the opening paragraphs of the NEC 90.1, it states: The purpose of this code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity.
