To obtain an insurance license in Texas, you will first need to complete a prelicensing course. This is highly recommended before you take your licensing exam, because if you would like to sell insurance in Texas, you must pass the licensing exam. You will need to make exam reservations ahead of time, as well as your plan to get fingerprinted. Fingerprinting is usually available at the testing center. Once you have passed the exam and been fingerprinted, you can then apply for an insurance license in the state of Texas.
The Texas Department of Insurance charges $50 for each license type, whether that is General Lines-Property & Casualty, or General Lines-Life, Accident & Health. The Department of Insurance also charges $150 for a temporary insurance license, which is valid for 180 days.
