Course Description
As a comprehensive and systematic study of the human response to trauma, this intermediate level course for Behavioral Health Professionals outlines the essentials of assessment and treatment for people who have been traumatized by interpersonal violence, natural disasters, large-scale accidents, war and other overwhelming events. This course is intended as a practical hands-on guide to trauma treatment that covers aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy, relational psychotherapy, as well as trauma psychopharmacology.
Course Objectives:
Discuss the major types of traumatic events, their potential effects, and the ways in which trauma and its outcomes can be assessed.
Discuss general issues relevant to trauma therapy, as well as more specific and technical aspects of treatment, including the treatment of acute trauma, the biology of trauma and psychopharmacological approaches to treating trauma survivors.

Bio For Catherine Scott - M.D.
Catherine Scott, MD, is Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Medical Director of the Psychological Trauma Program at LAC+USC Medical Center, and attending psychiatrist at the Psychiatric Emergency Service of LAC+USC Medical Center. She teaches and supervises resident physicians and medical students in the assessment and treatment (including psychopharmacology) or trauma-related issues and disorders. Her clinical and research interests include human rights, women’s issues, forensics, and the remediation of sexual violence and its effects.
Bio For John Briere - Ph.D
John Briere, PhD, is Associate Professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Director of the Psychological Trauma Program at Los Angeles County + USC (LAC+USC) Medical Center, and Co-Director of the MCAVIC-USC Child and Adolescent Trauma Program, National Child Traumatic Stress Network. He is a past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS). He is author or coauthor of a number of books, articles, and psychological tests in the areas of trauma and interpersonal violence.
Bio For Lynne M Dunphy - ARNP, PhD
Lynne M. Dunphy, ARNP, PhD, is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Association as a Family Nurse Practitioner as well as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. She received her doctorate in nursing from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, and has a masters of science in psychiatric mental health nursing from Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, New York City, NY. Dr. Dunphy is the Routhier Endowed Chair of Practice and Professor of Nursing at the College of Nursing, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI. She is the lead editor of a major textbook, Primary Care: The Art and Science of Advanced Practice Nursing. Dr. Dunphy is also co-author, with Dr. Jill Winland-Brown, of a certification review book for Adult and Family Nurse Practitioners, and sole author of a management guidelines book for Adult Nurse Practitioners.
