Celebrity Chef Dining Experience-New Horizons of North Texas
I have written about the amazing work being done by New Horizons of North Texas before, (Read my interview with their founder here), and I have the privilege of doing so once again to highlight a very exciting upcoming event. New Horizons of North Texas is hosting a dining experience with celebrity chef Tre Wilcox to raise money for the program. You will be given the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with chef Tre to learn pro cooking secrets. Be entertained, learn, and be fed! Sounds amazing doesn’t it?! It gets better, the proceeds from this event are going to the New Horizons of North Texas Program to help change the lives of at risk children and teens in Dallas.
Sounds delicious, but why does this cause matter? Great question, I’ll tell you why!
New Horizons of North Texas does incredibly important work in our community. They provide after-school tutoring, mentoring, and faith-building to at-risk youth. These students often come from difficult home lives and greatly benefit from the services and support provided to them in this program. Over 100,000 children in Dallas are left alone at home every day from 3pm-6pm. Often, they do not get the support they need to succeed in school and in life. Many children in Dallas have no one to make sure they do their homework, eat proper meals, study for tests, or even just make it to school on time. The volunteers of the New Horizons Program are there for these kids to provide them with support, accountability, and encouragement.
It is estimated that there will be 1 million illiterate adults in Dallas by 2030, unless we work to change that.
Within the New Horizons program, 89% of their students achieved above a C grade in reading, 86% of their students met attendance requirements, and 66% advanced above their grade level in reading. Considering the statistics these kids are facing in their neighborhoods, those are some outstanding results! This program is doing what is needed to turn negative projections for our city into something better-one child at a time.
So how can you help? Do you like good food?
Come and join the party!
Celebrity Chef Tre Wilcox was featured on Top Chef All-Stars televised on the Bravo Television network and has been named Best Chef by the Dallas Morning News. He also appeared on the Food Network show Iron Chef along with his mentor, where together they competed against Bobby Flay- and beat Bobby’s team! At age 29, Tre earned a five star review while working as Chef de Cuisine at Abacus.
I don’t know about you, but I’d really like to try this guy’s cooking!
Who wouldn’t want to cook along with a celebrity chef?! For many, that’s a dream come true-not only that, but you can do so while supporting the children in your community. The event is on November 18th from 5:30-9:00 at Tre Wilcox Cooking Concepts 8200 Preston Road, Suite 135, Plano, TX 75024.
